Virtual Memory

Hi,

Does anyone know a quick, easy and cheap way to increase your Virtual Memory?...........please bear in mind I'm a complete novice and have little techinical knowledge, so be gentle!!

Also, could this possibly be why I can't access BBC sites - a friend told me that as BBC is a large site I may not have enough Virtual Memory to be able to open the page - is this true or just clutching at straws coz we've tried everything else?

I am afraid that saying you do not have enough virtual memory to open a web site is one of the most pathetic computer excuses I have ever heard.

If for some reason you cannot open a web site it is likely to be for some other reason, although I am not sure what, but it is NOT your virtual memory.

Can you visit other web sites?

What happens when you go to the BBC web site (try http://www.bbc.co.uk and http://news.bbc.co.uk).

What message do you get?.

Some suggestions:

Check your security and Privacy settings in the internet browser (Tools, Internet Options, Security or Privacy)

Have you a firewall, check your firewall is not blocking your access to the site.

I may have some other suggestions if you tell me what happens when you actually visit the site.

Can I also explain that when you first visit any web site you only download a single web page, not the whole site.

The web page you download is only going to be a few characters of text, plus maybe a couple of pictures.

If you then move to another page on that site then you download THAT page, but it is all done a page at a time.

So it does not matter how large a web site is, you download only one page at a time.

Can I make one more suggestion.

If you are using Internet Explorer, then go to Tools then Internet Options.

Press Delete Files button.

This will delete ALL the old web pages you have downloaded in the past (plus the pictures, movie clips etc).

There may be thousands of them so it may take a few minutes.

Once it has finished then close down your browser, then open it up again, then try to visit the BBC web site.

What happens now ?

I've tried all of the following things so far & am still getting the same problem....

System Restore, Virus Scan (x5 diff programs), settings checked by ISP, Deleted all 'tmp' files, deleted cookies, changed privacy setting to default, all security settings set to default, reset modem, uninstalled everything added in the last month, checked that it isn't a local fault. I've tried using IE6, IE7 & Firefox. I use Windows XP and the Firewall is set to the default and BBC is listed as a trusted site....also I'm in the UK so shouldn't have any 'access' problems.I can go to www.bbcworld.com but can't use any of the links from there, and cannot access any sites that begin www.bbc.co.uk/ eg www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies - everything starts as normal but doesn't open and I get the 'Page cannot be displayed' message....as if it times out before the page can open!...I can view ALL other websites without any problems

Any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks

also, I have 224mb of RAM available - if that's any help.

This has been going on for about 3-4 weeks now....just to add one thing, don't know if it makes a difference though......

This has only been happening since it came back from the repair shop as the keyboard was replaced (laptop) and I could access BBC sites without any problems before then
