Anyone who has transferred money abroad, in my case to buy a property in France, do you know of a cheap way of doing it that also gets the best (commercial) exchange rate?

Phone your bank's private banking department and get an FX broker assigned to you. You'll need to open an FX account in the currency you want to move to (' then), then exchange and fill the other account. As for a cheap way of doing it, it's pretty much of a muchness unless you're planning on pushing billions around, which I doubt.
