How does a theremin work?

The theremin is the calssic sci-fi effects instrument with the two antennas controlling volume and pitch. If the theremin isn't touched then how does it work?

Afraid i don't know either, but I found a site about them, which I haven't had a chance to read fully. It may help.

I believe it reacts to the capacitance between your hand and the antenna.
