Windows 10 Upgrade

Decided (against my better judgement) to upgrade to W10 from 8.1
Began the process last night. Stages 1 (downloading) and 2 (verifying) went OK. Stage 3 (installing) began and I went to bed when it had reached about 10% complete. Woke this morning and it is at 99% (still asking me to wait).
Anyone any ideas? Should I reboot?

reboot and if possible revertl judge! They've been forcing this on us for over a year but the problem is that, as with all, microsoft "upgrades", it uses exponentiall y more resources than the one your PC came loaded with at the time. It does a check but even if your machine will be made to run like a dog it will still install, I never upgrade I just get the new OS when I...

It does a check but even if your machine will be made to run like a dog it will still install, I never upgrade I just get the new OS when I buy a new PC.
Same happened to me - luckily I had created a restore point before I begun and had to use it.

No it wasn't a prompt to upgrade, 3Ts. I'd been considering it as my current system is a right dog's breakfast. I'm not sure whether to close down just yet in view of OG's comments. I have a backup of all my files but whether I can successfully revert to W8 (or earlier) is another matter. I said it was against my better judgement and it seems I'm being proved right !!!
I already have a version of W10 but the update they keep trying to force on me keeps failing because, as TTT says, it does seem to require a lot of space. I keep clearing stuff out onto pen drives and have even deleted a big antivirus programme to see if that helps, but still no luck. Looks as if I am going to have to constantly reject these updates
Hi judge, it does seem to be an inordinately long time to run the upgrade. It will not be a fault of w10 though, more likely to be your internet speed or connection. I can promise you that w10 is infinitely better than the dismal w8:1, and better than w7 by miles. You mention the option of reverting to w7, but will not be able to do so if the device you upgraded came with w8 as it's operating system. You can of course go back to w8:1 as you know. I think I would be rebooting, if you have not already done so, keeping you original back up and trying again.
W10 gets the blame for a lot of "things" that are not really the system's fault. If I could give anyone a tip it would be to make sure all the upgrades on your current system are up to date. If you have not run them, or are in the habit of declining them when offered, w10 is likely to upgrade but inherit registry problems. This results in the problem that ff is experiencing. Are you getting an "Error" message" code or number ff? When you get the download failed advice you will need to look at the more info option which should give you the code number for the problem you have. With that code a fix is easy.

Still the same, thanks for asking, hc. Still stuck on 99% around fourteen hours after I began. Clearly something amiss. I imagine if I close down and restart I shall encounter all sorts of problems. The MS site makes it seem quite easy to revert but my experience of this sort of thing in the past is not good. I really meant it when I said it was against my better judgement but from what I'd read, on balance it seemed as id I may be better off.

Unfortunately tuvok's suggestion is not an option for me as my machine does not have a DVD drive nor do I have an external one.
I have always believed Microsoft Windows to be full of faults and bugs. I foolishly believed that W10 would be a superior product which may have overcome many of the problems. I'm not really after anything flash. All I want is an OS that actually works properly. I have had various Windows editions on various machines and they all seem to be unstable and prone to faults leaving the user to perform all sorts of updates and repairs to keep on working. I'll leave this "99%" nonsense running for a little while longer then I'll bail out and see if I can recover to something that at least works.

Yes thanks fender. I have a few things to do after the Stock Market closes at 5pm and then I'll try switching off and restarting. I'm not too hopeful that I'll get very far. If a new (incomplete) version of Windows has been installed and the PC tries to run it I imagine it will fall over. I'm no longer fussed about W10 as I simply cannot be bothered. But your tip may help me recover to where I was (which will do me just fine).

Anyway all over now. Restarted my machine and it seems to have suffered no ill effects and has reverted to W8.1. That’s the end of my dalliance with Microsoft upgrades. Thanks for all your help and indulgence. Best answer for 3Ts as his early advice was clearly the best course of action ! :-)
