It involves minced beef/pork/lamb and or pork farce and various other ingredients that is then cooked in a loaf tin in the oven. There are probably as many meatloaf recipes as there are American mothers, some are more like terrine and others are very spicy. Try starting by making a simple one then go nuts if everyone enjoys it. Make sure you have a loaf tin in hand then combine
1 white onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, mashed with a knife blade
2/3 slices of bread, crumbed
About 1.5 pounds of beef mince
An egg
Herbs and spices. Which you use are up to you, I usually add some fresh thyme and rosemary and some cayenne pepper and chilli powder. You'll find the combination you like if you try various things
Combine all the ingredients in a bowl, season well with salt and pepper, then place in a greased loaf tin. Heat your oven to 190 (possibly 200 for non-fan-assisted) and bake for an hour to an hour and a half. There will be some fat on the top but just drain this off. Serve with mash and green veg.
Make sure you have some leftovers, cold meatloaf sandwiches with english mustard rock.
And you can add in extra flavours like applesauce and mustard, peppers, chillies, varoius spices like paprika, or add sun dried tomatoes, extra onions, pesto - almost anything you fancy to be honest.
Try with turkey mince for a change, or even a vegetarian option with lentils etc. They are all fairly simple and you might want to try a couple of variations to get the one that suits you best.
