Ebay...why Would They Want A Telephone Number?

I'm trying to buy a back issue of a magazine. Every time I get to the paying page, there is...in red..."there is a problem,blah,blah...this order requires a valid address and PHONE NUMBER."
Why?
I don't particularly want to give my number out.

Make a phone number up if it insists on one. As long as it fits the format it will work. Somethimg like 0121 200200 which is not likely to belong to a sweet old lady!

Just tell them you don't have a phone.

I just may contact the seller...and politely ask.
It's a shame as they are the only seller with the issue I want...:-(

Had the same problem once, It is the transport company that insist on a number to message you when it will arrive. They won't accept the order unless you give it. The seller gave her number and messaged me through ebay with the tracking news.

It's not eBay that requires a phone number, neither is it the seller.

It's the courier firm used by the seller who might need a phone number, so that you can be advised of the delivery time and/or contacted if there's nobody at home when they try to deliver. So eBay automatically includes the requirement to enter a phone number when delivery will be by courier.

The delivery is by Royal Mail...for one magazine.
But...there is also an offer of 6 for £10...maybe that's where the problem is if it's delivered by courier.
Emailed the seller...waiting.
