Weekend off entitlements

I work full time in supported housing and entitled to 2 days off a week anyhow up until a few months ago we used to have regular ish weekends off, either every 3rd or 4th, if fully staffed.


Now it has come to our atttention, when staff have complained about not having had weekends off for months, that we are not entitled to them and only will have them when we are on annual leave which amounts to 6 weekends a year. I have checked all policies at work which says nothing about this, surely this must be wrong, also trying to find any regulations on the net regarding this, if there is such a thing. Any knowledge or advice where to look would be much appreciated.

I'm sorry to tell you that unless your contract specifically states that you get weekends off, then your employer is under no legal obligation to give you days off at the weekend. It's really crap I know, but as long as you get your agreed number of days off each week, I'm afraid that in the eyes of employment legislation, your employer is doing nothing wrong by making you take them during the week. (There are one or two exceptions to Sunday working but I'm afraid they don't apply to your line of work).

Nothing you can do about it I'm afraid other than lobbying your employer to try & make them agree to a certain number of weekends off. It's either that or perhaps time to look for another job...
