We have lived in this house for almost 13 years and yesterday we made a discovery.
There is a block of three light switches in the hall. We have no idea what the left hand one is for.
I don't understand how neither of us ever wondered what it was for.
I don't suppose there is anyway of finding out what it controls is there?

Outside light?
The basement where the bogey man lives -don't go in the basement!!! ;-)
Have you tried switching it ?
Maybe it doesn't connect anywhere.
Question Author
Not outside light, that is the middle one.
Haven't discovered the cellar yet!
Question Author
We have tried switching it on and walking round the outside of the house.
Cupboard under the stairs?
Question Author
That's the pantry in the kitchen with own light switch.
Open the light switch and check if it has a cable connected. If so, does it go up or down ? If up then go to the next floor first.

Lift up any floor coverings and the floorboards where the cable was heading. Continue to lift boards to follow the cable to its destination.

Once there, there's your answer !
You could perhaps ask the neighbours if they have a similar arrangement.
Attic - or the one that goes on the evening of the 24th to guide Santa in.....?
Question Author
Old Geezer that sounds a good idea, will have a go at that tomorrow.
Thank you.

Just told OH about lifting floorboards. His comment was two words ending in "OFF"
I once lived in a flat with a mystery switch. Turned out that it switched off next door's hall light.
Jemmy'm off ?
do you have an outside light? or a cupboard, if upstairs could there be a light in the attic maybe
Perhaps it's a switch to 'borrow' next door's electricity ( disguised as a light switch )

Ask next door, if they have ever wandered why their bill was so high
