when my neighbours washing machine is filling up with water each time it stops for a minute, as they do when fillig . i get a banging noise in my house pipe. we are terreced and share the same water surply. when they are out it dont happen. do anyone know what it is.

I think the Professor is right, slates.

Fit what is known as a "water hammer arrester" also known as a "shock arrester". Around 15 to £20. Fit as near to the offending washing machine as possible.

I know it's on your neighbour's side, but it seems that you share an incoming water supply. This shouldn't happen if you are on separate meters though.
