Hi

every othernight i get very little sleep this has been going on for weeks now

i know that is it purely in my head and i have got this thing in my mind that if i dont sleep for ages i will die :(

i have spoken to my doc and he tells me to try CBT and mindfullness therapy before trying pills, i have been suffering form anxiety

he also tells me people dont die from lack of sleep that your body will force you to sleep eventually and not to worry

any one any words of wisdom?

Do a bed time routine if possible. Turn off all technology and have a relaxing bath. Try and do this about the same time every night.
Do you have worrying things on your mind which affects your sleep?
breadstick, I'm a bad sleeper. I can go for three nights tossing and turning and getting up at the crack of dawn and then say for the next three nights, I sleep quite well! It's just my sleep 'routine' I guess. Maybe not sleeping well every other night is just yours now. Less sleep often happens as we get older too.

i worry about everything

the latest is a fear of choking in public whilst eating food

Jambutty have been told that too hopefully true :)
One of my friends sleeps for only 3 hours a night and is perfectly happy., maybe you are like her and Margaret Thatcher, that just dont need a lot of sleep as they get older.
Do you work ? can you have a lie in if you want to? Try reading and sewing , knitting anything you find relaxing , and don't get stressed if you can't sleep.
Do you have a close friend you can tell all the things that are on your mind, sharing often helps, have done it loads of times and works for me. x
try your GP advice, I tried some CBT exercises for anxiety and they were helpful for me.

Ummmm's advsie is good too, a relaxing routine each night.

I found listening to sounds that soothe me works when trying to sleep, for me it's the sound of the sea or rain. There are some usefuil free apps if you have acces to a PC or smartphone.
Sounds can be soothing .

The sound of rain falling on a zinc roof , particularly ( i don't know if you can get apps for that )
Oh yes relaxation CDs I have a few of them as well , most I have never got to the end of.
Have you tried reading in bed? I know a lot of people don't get very far with their book as they suddenly want to doze off!
