This is a humanitarian disaster, not seen since 1945. The UN should be taking a much greater role in this......the situation isn't going to go away, as long as there is war in the Middle East. Most of these people are fleeing for their lives, despite what some people would have us believe.
What choice do they have.....to stay and be killed by whatever chemical weapon that Assad uses, or be killed by IS ?

It’s not a humanitarian disaster, Mikey. That applies to earthquakes, tsunamis etc. This is a deliberate attempt by millions of people to up sticks and take advantage of the better conditions which our ancestors ensured exist in Europe. And it will go on for as long as the European navies station themselves a few miles off the Libyan coast and pluck migrants from the drink, transporting them safely and comfortably to Italy. The majority of the current wave face no threat of bombing and gassing by Assad or anybody else. They hail from Eritrea and Somalia. Agreed it’s not too nice there but Europe cannot accommodate everybody from Africa who decides it’s not too nice where they are.
The answer is to either leave them to their own devices and confine those that arrive or simply return them to Libya. If they want to continue to try to reach Italy good luck to them, but they must face harsh conditions if and when they crawl ashore.

“100,000's of people have arrived on the southern shores of the Med, and many 1000s have died and its not a humanitarian disaster ?”
No it’s not, Mikey. Disasters are things that happen outside the control of the victims, as in the examples I quoted earlier. These people (and I’m talking particularly about those embarking from Libya who have travelled from sub-Saharan Africa) have not suffered a disaster. They suffer from being somewhat displeased with where they lived because their countries have not enjoyed the sort of development that has been engineered in Europe. They have chosen to leave for pastures new knowing that they face perils, particularly at sea. They have imperilled themselves and their children to try to get to places they are not entitled to settle in.
Much of Europe wasn’t too pleasant centuries ago. It was rife with disease, insanitary conditions, Civil Wars, international wars and oppression. That changed thanks to the perseverance of those around to change it. Europeans are now reaping the reward of all that effort. Can you explain to me why those rewards should be shared (to the considerable detriment of those already here) by chancers who don’t like it where they are.
This current mass movement of people in indeed a disaster - for the current incumbents, not for the incomers. Unless and until European governments recognise for what it is – an invasion by people dissatisfied with their lot – it will continue.

If they showed their passports and came through for a holiday we wouldn't know what diseases they had either would we AOG?
Somehow these people must be being duped by traffickers into thinking it's a safe journey and they will be rescued and taken to Italy if problems arise. What needs to be done- but I don't know how- is that far more traffickers need to be put out of action and a message needs to be put across to potential travellers that the chances of drowning are extremely high and that there will be no life saving within neutral waters or within a specified distance from the Libyan coast and boats will be repeatedly turned back or towed into neutral waters. It sounds harsh but it may save more lives in the long run

“If they showed their passports and came through for a holiday we wouldn't know what diseases they had either would we AOG?”
Quite true. But if they’d arrived with a passport for a holiday the chances are that they would not have come from a disease infested hell-hole. Few people from those areas have the funds to lavish on a holiday in France or Italy and in any case they would probably arrive by air, not in a rubber boat and then an Italian warship.

They shouldn’t need much duping because that’s precisely what happens. The Italian navy together with one or two UK ships are now patrolling just a few miles off the Libyan coast.
I think it’s common ground between us what needs to be done, f-f, but the authorities show no signs of doing it. As I keep saying, the resources should be directed to keeping the migrants out, not helping them to get here and then distributing them across the continent after thay have arrived. All the current strategy is achieving is encouraging vast numbers to continue to set sail into the Med.
