One word, " Greed" he should be stripped of his Knighthood as soon as.
An attempt to cram the whole story into 2 minutes here....

not exactly, big fashion department stores are all having hard times, faced with smaller more trendy shops and online shopping. But some have responded to the challenge a whole lot better than the shysters who ran this one, and who pocketed all the money and ran away.
I think it was running down long before the shysters stepped in. 20 years ago, DH and I used to buy the majority of our work clothes there. We both had to wear smart casual, I needed trousers not skirts and we could both could find suitable stuff without spending a fortune. Then they went all yoof market and stopped selling decent basics so we moved over to shopping at Cotton Traders They used to be brilliant for lighting then the prices got out of hand so Ikea looked a better bet...its always a dangerous point where the real estate becomes worth more than the turnover.
Agree with Woofgang. The rot set in long before. They just didn't get with the times.

Not that being bled dry by owners etc helped much but it was going to happen sooner or later. The real shame is the workers pension pot being scavenged and wasted. That, for me is the real travesty. Business go out for many different reasons but to raid the pensions of your hard working employees is the kicker.
Next door to BHS in Newcastle was my favourite store, C & A. Got some really good sensible clothes there. Gone nearly 18 years now, yet they are still thriving on the continent. Can't understand it.
Coats n Ats, jackdaw? :)
Worse than that, Chrissa!
No, no, no. I was brought up in, Gosforth, yer kna!! Lol.
I think the rot set in when their stores were overrun by concessions like Dorothy Perkins, Wallis etc. There were hardly any of their own BHS clothes towards the end. A great shame.
