When you read in the paper about how many people watch Downton or Coronation Street or on BBC or ITV, HOW DO THEY KNOW WHO WATCHED WHAT. Just interested, Bram

They do surveys although i have never been asked and don't know anyone who has. Used to be called JICTAR or similar

Yes, seems things have moved on since the 1970s when I last looked into this!
Was JICTAR not only for ITV viewers?
Basically they have a 'panel' of viewers who have a meter fitted to their TV set that reports which channel they watch and when. This panel is chosen to represent all 'types' of viewers. They then use the figures from the panel and extrapolate to get a figure for the entire country.
