Never found that out, now I throw away shirts when the buttons fall off.
Has it got a little wire? You have to thread the thread through the wire and then thread the wire through the eye of the needle.
I hate threading needles! I can never see the hole!
Put the end of the threader loop through the eye of the needle. Put cotton in the loop the put it through the needle.
I have an Asbo in these matters.
There you go....

You put the tiny "wiry" thing through the eye of the needle - then when it is through there is a little gap in the "wiry" thing - put your thread in the gap and pull the "wiry" thing until it is through the eye of the needle.

i couldn't work out if you have to put it through first then put thread through and pull it out, or your way wolf - i looked at a youtube vid in the end
Easy! You push the needle threader through the eye of the needle, then put your cotton through the eye of the needle threader, then gently pull..
I guess I should be using a needle threader.
They're very easy; you pass the needle and thread to the needle threader and say, "'ere you, thread this for me". And they do, and pass it back.
The sort of needle threader which I have is a doddle. A plastic device vaguely resembling a small toy ship with two funnels. You put the eye of the needle into one funnel, the thread across the other, and push a little lever which pushes the thread through the eye.
You can of course buy self threading needles (no they aren't magic) - buy the best quality you can though, some are poor.
