I caught the tail end of an advert on LBC last night, about smart meters for your lecky. It said that everybody is entitled to a free one, from their energy provider.

Does anyone know anything about this and how do they work ?

I avoid anything that is prefixed as 'Smart'...... Cars, Watches, Phones, Meters, etc. There is generally an expensive catch somewhere.

Hans.
Also if,like us,you have solar panels there is some doubt about as to compatability.
What they don't tell you is, so I'm led to believe is the meters are aren't compulsory. You can decline having one fitted.
^^ I got a phone call trying to get me to switch. The operator denied all knowledge of the 'remote disconnect'. I do not think that the salespeople who are pushing them are told about remote disconnect.
I told her it was 'not for me' and she hung up.
I had one where I used to live - provided by my then provider. No problems at all, it's just a better way of recording your use and the readings are automatically fed back to the supplier, so no manual readings. Just signed up for one with Eon. It's all free, so why not?
I'm curious about this 'remote disconnect' that's been mentioned, do they warn you or could you be plunged into darkness halfway down a flight of stairs?

Would they be liable for any injuries or worse?
Just ask yourselves. So these meters are a wonderful boon for the consumer, they are going to enable us to use less electrickery and reduce our bills, whilst saving the planet and ensuring that we can all do our washing for no cost whatsoever. Right? And the utility companies are giving them away and fitting them at no cost to us. Now I bet that makes sense does it not, the avaricious suppliers want to reduce our bills (and their profits) and to do it out of the goodness of their hearts. Plus the moon is made of cheese. With these meters they will indeed make you "smart".
