I had one out in the chair, in the middle of exams so no let up for me, to be honest, after the initial pain from the infection I had, the antibiotics I was given were hard to cope with, I couldn't keep anything down with them.
I had the other three out under a general, so no work for that day or a couple after (though had to travel quite a way and stay over too) but recovered very quickly, was a straightforward extraction, no having to cut the gums etc...

I guess it depends on what your friend does as a job as well, a job speaking a lot it could be harder initially if still sore and swollen. Could be worth asking about restricted duties while recovering if that is possible.
