How long after getting license can I rent a car?

I should have my Driving License by August and then I'm going travelling in South America next January; through Peru, Bolivia and Brazil and then maybe to the States for a while. I was wondering if I would be able to rent a car in all these countries having only just passed my test about 5 months beforehand?

Or actually, if anyone knows if I'll be able to pick up a cheap car in South America, would that be a good idea?

I would suggest that your age and inexperience may make things slightly difficult for you in the sense that you're liable to be charged considerably more than a seasoned driver.

Your best source of information may be the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and their details can be found if you Google FCO.

I think the main problem will be getting insurance Benj - either with a hire company or privately. Your age and inexperience are the stumbling blocks. I hope you sort it out though and have a great time.

Thanks guys! A friend who I'm going with has her license for 5 years so I'll get her to hire it and then just drive it on the long straights :)

I'm assuming that' last is a tongue in cheek remark. If your friend hires it and you drive it anywhere, you won't be insured. Do you really fancy a South American jail?

Seriously, as a rule of thumb here, most rental companies will charge extra for under 25, and require that their customers have held a licence for a minimum of two years.
