How To Format An Ext Hard Drive That Is Registering As A Cd Drive?

As above really ... i have an ext hard drive that has gone weird and is now unaccessable because the computer thinks its a virtual CD drive rather than an ext hard drive.

all the usual format options don't appear for that reason.

i cannot access the data so i need to reformat then run recovery software on it.

any ideas

I'm not claiming any expertise here but lots of google links refer to going to Start > Run and typing 'diskmgmt.msc' into the field. You may well find that there's an option that allows you to re-designate the drive from a CD drive to a hard drive. If not this may help:
