If you might need a map, you can look at it when connected to the wifi and get the pictures on your phone and they will still be viewable even when off wifi. Though having said that, I have never had that much of a problem with maps and data consumption (as a lot is based on GPS), but it is something to bear in mind.

Don't want Bernie to confuse piggy:
Both WhatsApp and Facebook/Messenger are free for sending and receiving images, videos, texts, etc .... it's the data usage that costs you.
If you use them whilst using free Wi-Fi, then there's no problem. If you use them whilst using your own data, you must be careful not to exceed your data limit .... or you'll get hammered, as piggy unfortunately found out :(

As others have said, there is no easy answer to, "How many messages in 500Mb ?" If you send one word messages you can send a lot more than if you send long ones with attachments. Does your service provider give you somewhere on the Net where you can check your usage ? Or they may have a short code you can dial to get the info. Check out their website and any FAQ.
