I have got out my old lava lamp to use again after two years, but little blobs of wax are stuck on the inside of the glass, I left it on for several hours thinking the newly heated wax would gather up the stuff that was stuck but it hasn't, anyone got an idea what can be done? it doesn't look nice as it is.

Apply heat to the outside of the glass (carefully!)....with, say, a hairdryer?
A tip on this site says to wrap the body of the lamp in foil and run for a few hours.
