wrong category, Doh!
Never mind...
I am no expert, but I would suggest that a 'social' laptop may require the software capacity to play games, and use social media, an 'everyday' laptop would have an Office package for work, and an e-mail capacity.

Just basic logic, I am as I say, no expert, maybe others will know better.

Thanks Andy. Just looking for a basic lappy to access the internet at home and get back on broadband

Ah, its been put in to the right category now, thank you.
A quick look show that the "everyday" ones have big hard discs - lots of space for photos, videos etc. The "social" ones don't seem to mention the HDD size ie, storage isn't important, so I guess than andy-hughes is on the right lines.
Even a pretty basic Tesco special offer laptop will fulfil both of those categories unless the games you wish to play are really heavyweight - if they are then you can pretty much pay what you wish. If you have a budget in mind we could recommend one for you - I`d only suggest you avoid Lenovo as they are a bit flimsy with poor backup and Acer as they can be fussy and restrictive.
Those 'social' laptops are no good at all for playing games and have very small drives and not much RAM.
They are fine for people who just want to access social media such as FaceBook and Twitter and email.

An 'everyday' laptop does those things but are more powerful (more RAM), have large hard drives for storage and better screens and processors.

Thanks for replies. Just looking for a basic lappy to access internet, I don't really do 'techy' stuff, gaming or anything. Have had a couple of Acer lappys in the past that have been reliable enough.
Having to use library 'putters at the mo but looking to get back on broadband before crimbo.
It seems to me that your most important considerations before purchase are:

size of screen - big or small? Screen size usually means weight, so the bigger the screen the heavier it will be to carry around

battery life - will you be using it away from the mains much? If so, you need a laptop with a long battery life

Question Author
hc, could do with a fair size screen for watching vids (you tube etc) not to concerned about battery life as it will only be used in the home (near plug) and maybe enough memory to store music.
Don't get memory mixed up with HDD size nailit. Things are stored on the HDD; memory is used during processing. If you want to store lots of music/photos you need a decent size HDD.

Thanks for help and answers guys, will have to pick up any additional answers when I can next get the use of a 'puter....I really need to get back on the internet ;-)
Thanks again all, much appreciated
CAtC...."Acer can be fussy and restrictive".....my Acer is neither and in six and a half years has never given a moment's trouble.
...and, yes, I did notice you said "can be"!
The fussy and restrictive I was referring to was for any sort of an update whether hard or software.
