How much should this cost if using a specialist will writer. Husband and wife.
Likewise Lasting Power of Attorney.
As regards the LPA, is it usual to have your spouse nominated or a trusted other person

Family situation is Husband/wife second marriage with step children on both sides.

For a will I would either DIY or go to a solicitor if I felt I needed help. Solicitors are regulated, will writers are not. The cheapest way to do an LPA is DIY too and if you are on benefits I believe its cheap or may be free. There is no “usual” in who you appoint, you do it according to your needs and circumstances, consider appointing more than one person.
