When I try to type 0 in brackets, viz. (0) as in a telephone number to give someone, using Widows Live Mail, instead of it I get a symbol of a small blue clockface, why is this and how can I prevent it, please?

Once typed, you can press Ctrl + Z to undo it and revert to what you just typed.

To turn them off try Options>Mail>Compose tab and unchecking "Convert special key strokes to emoticons".
This sounds very like the little devil issue someone had recently when typing (6). It seems some things treat them as codes. Must be able to turn them off in the settings somewhere ?
I know that Emoticons do materialise when standard brackets are used in some e/mail programmes. Have you tried using alternative brackets....[ eg ]
