The dog owner is a serving police officer
Staffies will eventually be put on the banned breeds list. That would be a tragedy brought on by the youngsters breeding these dogs for the looks and the wrong temprament.

///The dog was reportedly owned by a serving police officer. It is not known whether Pc Clare Ferdinand, 31, the dog's owner, was at the address when the pet - believed to a Staffordshire bull terrier type - mauled the family. Essex Police have refused to confirm that Mrs Ferdinand is employed by them, though friends of the victims' family insisted she was///.

If that is true then it is appalling. A police officer should know better.

Know better than what Jack?
No one, whatever their standing or profession is immune to a split second tragedy ending in horror as this has done.

No winners in this only losers, very sad indeed.

it has been reported in some news outlets that the dog's owner was the little boys' aunt, and that the family had very recently moved in. the impression given by the reporting (could be misleading of course) is that the introduction of the new residents wasn't handled very well, leaving the dog to work out for itself where it stood in the new pecking order.

Neither of them make me smile.
My dad had a Staff. I wouldn't even take my kids round for a visit unless he locked her away.

Only a few generations ago,the Staffie was called " the nanny dog" due to its reputation as an excellent playmate with children. It's probably cross breeding and mismanaged training as fighter dogs by certain elements in society that's changed some.
^^^ Spot on Pasta, They are being bred by some to be big and more aggressive to look mean on the streets with their studded leather harnesses etc and heavy chain collars round their necks
