my son has started ,over past few days,having probs with his left knee,not being able to put much weight on it,He is unaware of what is causing it.He is over weight,but not had this happen before.could it be cartlage?

It doesn't sound like a cartilage problem from your description and could be caused by many things, none serious. If he takes Ibuprofen 400mgms if and when he gets the pain, then that will sort out the minor problems. If it persists or gets worse after 1-2 weeks, then see his GP.

Don't know, but the first thing I would do is buy him an elastic knee bandage and see if that gives any improvement.

many thanks all,must admit didn't think is cartilage from what OH has said when he had cartilage probs,had removed from both knees years ago.
