Hippocrates believed the human body was filled with four basic substances called humors. The four humors were black bile, yellow bile, phlegm and blood and they were linked to the four elements of earth, fire, water and air.
The Greeks and Romans believed all diseases and illnesses were caused when people lost the essential balance between the four substances.
Theophrastus took this one step further and said the four humors affected your personality and defined the four personality types as sanguine(cheerful), phlegmatic(solid), choleric(grumpy) and melancholic(gloomy).
Each of these character types indicated too much of one of the humors. Melancholic meant you had too much black bile and Choleric meant you had too much yellow bile. If you use the charts given above, you should be able to work out the other two. Hope this helps and good luck!
