Well what can you say? I wonder how long they gave them to gt away?
Any why do we import onions, surely we can grow and distribute them from within the UK, reducing carbon and pollution?

Who is/are 'they', YMB- the person who filmed it or the police? It sounds as if it wasn't reported to the police at the time so it's hard to blame the police for any delay.
Hopefully there is enough info to identify the lorry and driver. There may even be a strong smell of onions from the migrants so maybe someone will sniff them out
I am not sure you real concern here is the environment but if it is you could raise the matter with whoever was buying the onions if you can follow the trail.

Hopefully they noted the reg number too and have now passed it on to the police as it sounded as if the police hadn't got it in that Mail report.
Presumably they could pick the reg up from CCTV at Dover.
I am pretty sure the driver will just say he didn't know until he opened the door to investigate.

/// And yes actually I really do not see the point of transporting any item loads of miles when it could be bought locally. ///
Spanish onions are much milder than our English variety.
But it makes one wonder if this load of onions will have to be scrapped, due to the fact that they may well be contaminated with urine or worse.

// All lorry doors should now be custom sealed and checked that they haven't been tampered with before departure.//
no you have to think these things out before posting
what do you do if the seal is broken ?
chuck away the load ?
In that case I as an migrant go around cutting the seals with a pair of pliers
and then pile in with all my friends when it drives back empty for another load
eh meester give me lift or I cut your seal .....
You could have a sustem of bonded warehouses but it would look more like a POW camp than it does now

The load will have to be destroyed now. All food that is carried in a lorry found with 'passengers' in with the cargo has to be destroyed under health and hygiene regulations.
As I have said before it is estimated that over 90% of all illegal migrants actually get through unchallenged! We only hear about the few that get caught!

Would it not be a more sensible idea to reward drivers who find stowaways in their truck as long as they hand them over to the police?
At the moment a driver who is found with an illegal stowaway in the truck gets fined £5,000 and if the load is food that gets destroyed. This means a driver who unknowingly collects a 'passenger' is most likely to just let them out and keep his mouth shut! I am sure that happens many times a day!
If there was a reward rather than a fine drivers would hand the stowaways over to the authorities rather than just keeping quite , what do others think?
