Military Records In Ireland Mid 1800S
7 Answers
I've just spent the afternoon trying to find military records for Ireland, mid 1800s, and had a brainwave that one of you might know where they are kept. It's my great-great grandmother I'm searching for. She married an English Soldier who was posted out there. Quite romantic. They travelled to Canada and the Carribean with several small children, but sadly died in the workhouse, terribly poor.

There aren't a lot of actual Irish records avaiable; many were destroyed in uprisings. You may be able to find them on UK census returns if they were in Britain in 1841, 1851 etc. But as dannyk suggests, it might be easier to try the husband's regiment, they can probably tell you where he was and when. I think some regimental records are online but not all.
Where was the workhouse, in Britain? If so it should be in the censuses too.
