Is there a GOOD FREE picture recovery program. I erased a camera memory card and then found out the files I had copied to my hard drive had been erased after a 'backup'!! Is there a program that can get files back off the erased memory card? I don't particularly want to buy it 'cos I shall make sure that I don't make the same mistake again. Or maybe a program that can look for a file number or something? Any help is much appreciated.
Cheers

Off topic and totally ignoring "FREE". If you take your hands off the keyboard and do nothing whatsoever to attempt data recovery, there is a good chance that this Company can recover your files: http://www.krollontrack.co.uk/data-recovery/

One usually does not distinguish between recovering picture data files from recovering other files.

There are plenty of recovery programmes out there. Just don't install it or anything else on the drive you wish to recover from.
A memory card will look like a drive when plugged into the PC. But you may find them from the hard drive anyway.

Thanks for your swift reply OG. I'm thinking of trying Recuva-should I run it from my main drive C: to recover from an internal drive D: ?

Yes, you can point Recuva to the drive you wish to recover from. Don't use the memory card in the meantime (hope I am not too late). I recovered some wedding pictures using this program. A grateful bride and groom was the result!
Yes that's fine. Just ensure wherever you install it's not the same drive you may wish to recover from.
What I mean is that you said you'd copied them to a hard drive, but deleted them. Don't install to that drive.

Well it looks as if the photos are gone forever!! I will forever ignore my friends who continually say to me that I do too many copies! On this occasion stupidity has cost me dearly; the message is :- do copies of copies and backups of backups and don't worry about 'drive space'.
Disk Drill can recover data from your memory card even if it was corrupted, reformatted or damaged http://download.cnet.com/Disk-Drill/3000-2094_4-76277044.html
