tickets,budget airlines and passports

If a person has been known by one name for decades but holds a passport in another,previous,name ...in which name should a ticket on a budget airline be bought?

Whatever, the airline, if you're travelling abroad, you'll run into trouble if you try to travel on a name other than that on your passport. But for budget airlines, you definitely won't be allowed on the plane unless you book in your passport name.

I would thought that you would have to purchase the ticket in the same name as what is in your passport. Budget airlines request to see passports as a form of ID, even if you are flying within the UK.

As a matter of interest that hapoened to me shortly after i got married. i was told I had to pay 140 quid to change ticket! but when I got to airport they were satisfied with my numerous other forms of ID and as I had booked the tickets I could give my address etc (Also excellently bit of tactical crying by moi even if I do say so myself). That was last Aug though so they have probably tightened it up again since. Better safe than sorry - use passport name... or get a new passport!
