What would you pay?

Hi Everyone!

Hope your all keeping cool!

As some of you may know, we now have some chickens and people have been asking me for eggs (friends and family) I was at first going to just give them away, but people started saying "No, no we will give you something for them" so how much would you pay for 1/2 a dozen eggs? I was thinking 50p, and whatever we made would go in a kitty towards the chicken food, straw etc.. so we wouldn't be profiting from it, which isn't why we got them in the first place, it is just a bonus that we get eggs from them :o)

I would appreciate any input please :o)

Our old neighbour used to sell them for half the price in the shops Wingnut - just a guide.

they sell them at �1 for 6 in the pub. Fro a local chicken farmer. They're the oversized ones that are too big to be sold to the supermarkets.

I think �1.50 for proper free range organic farmyeard eggs is very reasonable

chap down the road from me sells them at 60p (large) & 50p (small).

My bf's mum pays �1.40 for a dozen, but these are huge eggs, a quid sounds reasonable

Hello Wingnut - Glad the eggs from your chickens are still coming. No, you definitely shouldn't give your eggs away. You have the overheads (and your time) for looking after your chickens to take into account. We pay 1 pound ten shillings for 6 fresh eggs produced by our neighbour's young daughter who is raising some chickens for pocket money. We wouldn't dream of buying eggs from battery hens and we think this is a fair price for the freshness of the eggs, and to encourage her to produce food which is delicious to eat. I think 50p is probably far too cheap. Haven't bought eggs (even free range) from a supermarket for ages but check out what they're charging before you decide.

Thanx everybody for your fantastic replies! :o)

I will wait till we go shopping on Friday and see how much they sell for and take it from there. Just wanted to get a rough idea of what people thought would be a reasonable price.

They will mainly be going to my Mum and Step-Dad, who I told I don't want money for them but she insists as she wants them every week and won't buy from the supermarket anymore. I didn't want to rip her off lol

Free range eggs are well over �1 for 6, but you can get cheap eggs for 50 or 60p.

I sometimes sell mine on a charity bring & buy for �1, but if I sell them to friends and keep the cash for hen food it's 50p as, I agree, you don't want to make a profit out of friends.

BTW I keep records of what I spend and my eggs cost about 6p each (but if you count the cost of the hen house it's 22p/egg even after 3 years, so I'll have to carry on keeping them for a while yet to bring the cost down near shop eggs)

Thanx dancecaller that's very interesting. I thought about keeping a book of how many I sell, amount etc.

I must admit I am enjoying my husbands hobby lol ..beats footie!
