Anything made by Legos... the figures can be relatively simple to construct or many are very complex. You'll have to help with the first one but after that it's amazing how proficient the child becomes at putting these things together. Our ten year old got his first set at age 5 and just finished a Star Wars Sand Cruiser with over 1500 parts... the Bionicle series is a good place to start since the child can imagine all sorts of predicaments once the figure is completed...

I think magnetix are brilliant.

You can get sets in Argos starting from 5.

Well my five year old is very keen on Power Rangers SPD!

I have an 8 year old he gets given loads but the things he still likes best are the 'ordinary' things liike toy cars, lego (the sort that come with the little pull back and go motors), Top Trumps, Book tokens, anything to do with Dr Who, Robot Wars or Top Gear - what about the new Top Gear Winter Olympics DVD I haven't met a boy from 2 to 92 who hasn't LOVED that!! Get toys that involve building or actual playing with, there is a danger of buying the 'flash' toy but all to often they do all the work there isn't actually any playing involved.

I forgot The Captain Underpants books by Dav Pilkey. 6 year old boys absolutely LOVE them!
My lad's 6, and it's Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lego, any of the Superheros - Batman etc, Indiana Jones and X-Men...
