That is just nucking futs. Must be some sort of maths/phsychological thing. If you do the subtraction and get the wrong answer it comes up with the symbol for the correct answer.

If you add the two digits and subtract form the original number, the answers are all multiples of 9 so the same symbol is repeated every ninth time. The sequence changes at each attempt so it looks more impressive than it is.

The answer will always be either zero, or a multiple of 9...the symbol under 9, 18, 27, 36 ...etc ...changes with each go ... it's a silly trick designed to fool people with little or no knowledge of basic mathematics

A slightly more Vordermanesque answer.

If the number you choose has tens digit 'x' and ones digit 'y' then:

The value of the number is 10x+y

The total of the digits is x+y

The value of the number less the total of the digits is
(10x + y) -( x +y) = 10x + y - x - y which is 9x

As x must be a whole number greater than 1, the 'magic' number is always a multiple of 9.

Each multiple of 9 is given the same symbol.
