At last I have finished in time to ask for clarification. For the last two weeks, I got the last answers just as bath time arrived so I just had to hope that the answers were correct but not know fully why they were. This week I have two pleas for help.
39 d " note old lag losing head in overseas diplomat's residence" With the letters I have the answer seems to be " consulate" which meets the the last bit. And an old lag could be con. But the rest has me baffled.
44 ac " very useful, justifying one's pronounced delay in target area. I am pretty sure that the answer is " worth one's weight in gold" which I suppose means very useful. But again I cannot work out anything else.
Help in the next quarter of an hour will be gratefully received!

Worth (justifying) ones ..sounds like wait ..in gold (archery target area)
C (note) o(ld) (I)nsulate (lag)
Hi Steven, hope you & yours are well?

Consulate - 'C' (note) + 'o(ld)' + '(i)nsulate' (lag, no head)
Worth one's weight (wait, pronounced) in gold (target in archery)

Thank you both so much. As ever, when you explain the reasoning I understand! The lag bit really fooled me. I couldn't get beyond the convict meaning. Hence con just went round and round in my head. I really am grateful,
Yes sir' we are very well. Three weekends ago SWMBO took me to North Yorkshire (we stayed in Pickering) for a " do". Tbh, I wasn't looking forward to it as I thought I'd be spending the time with a lot of oldies. And there were a lot but they were really interesting. And Yorkshire! I have fallen love with it. It is so beautiful!
