Recently I've been unable to sleep. It's like I've forgotten his to breath. I can exhale but forget to inhale. Also my mouth is so so dry with no saliva so I can't fall asleep as it's like sandpaper. Last nigh go was eating throat sweets and drinking water but it started again as doin as I lay down. I've had a dry tickly cough for ages and yesterday started to get yet another cold- headache, blocked and runny nose which may explain the breathing through my mouth and making it dry. But I'm most worried about the fact that I can't seem to breathe 'naturally' in my sleep without waking up feeling like I'm choking.

See your GP. He/she can get you a mask that will solve your problems.
That description doesn't sound like obstructive sleep apnoea,

Your symptoms sound like a simple nasal obstruction due to the swelling of the inside of your nose........due to a cold.

Go to the chemist and buy a nasal decongestive spray e. Sinex or Vick.
my diagnosis would be the same as Sqad's (now there's a thing...) - that's the sort of thing that sometimes happens to me with colds.
