Have Radio 4 on low volume - what time are you going to bed? Is this unusual for you to have trouble dropping off?
Have you tried Nytol, from the pharmacy, not off the shelf?

Do you know anyone who is going to America soon.? If so, ask them to get you some Unisom.

Otherwise, see your GP.
Nytol is extremely expensive and a waste of money. You can buy the generic form which is just as good and half the price.
I always read until I can't keep my eyes open any more. I have two pillows, one parallel with the headboard, the other at right angles to the headboard, worth a try, maybe? Good luck.
I wouldn't recommend medication without knowing what meds you may be on already, have you a routine to unwind in the evenings, are you drinking alcohol, that doesn't really help sleep in the long term, if you're able take some exercise and get out during the day that's good, maybe a bit of gardening, I'd rule out everything before going the medicating yourself route, it's a bad road to go down
Listen to a podcast. Originz and Mysteries Abound are my favourites, they are about 1,30 hours long , but I time my iPhone to stop after 30 mins. The Podcaster Paul Harrop has such a soothing voice, although the episode is so interesting, I guarantee you won't get to the end.
Try reading Gibbon's "Decline and fall of the Roman Empire". It will bore you to sleep.
Do not take Nytol. I used it for quite a while. It does work. But pharmacist told me that was why I had high blood pressure, been on on tablets for it about 15-20 years now.
I usually try picturing a brick wall in my mind and every time I think of something else I look at the brick wall again. Womrks for me most of the time. Happy snoozing

When the Nytol (or generic version) doesn't work, I imagine I'm playing tennis against Roger Federer. We have endless rallies, and I always win, of course.
Try clearing your mind of thoughts by concentrating on breathing very slowly.
Inclined to read until I fall asleep also count from 100 to zero.
