SQAD you have an opinion as does JORDY but to call BA nonsense and wanting it stopped appears a wee bit strong.
Coorbyloon.

" but to call BA nonsense and wanting it stopped appears a wee bit strong."
That is your opinion to which you are entitled, but not my opinion to which i am entitled.
Brilliant work by the ladies at the National Library in Scotland. The restoration probably took as much skill and dedicated work as the making of the original map. Great story and a good video.
I missed this yesterday, so thanks Jordy & Mamya - what a fascinating article.

It's hard to imagine the thrill of anticipation they must have felt when realising they had a chance to restore one of only 3 known examples of the map. Mamya's right, it must be so rewarding to have that job.
What has not been explained is the fact that if this was part of a bundle of rags found stuffed up a chimney to stop draughts, had there been no fire set in the fireplace in all those years?

Looks that way AOG.
Agreed, it may have been in a room where the fire wasn't lit.

I grew up in a house with an open fireplace in every room, we certainly didn't use them all.

We have not had a fire lit in our fireplace since we bought our house 31+ years ago

I also grew up in a house with an open fireplace in every room, and we certainly used every one.

It was lovely to go to bed on a cold winter's night and feel the warmth of an open fire.

31 plus years!!

We are talking around 400 years here.
I did at my Grandmothers but am afraid the bedroom fires weren't lit when I was little at home, pennies were short.

Army coats piled on the bed, waking up with the buttons having left an imprint on your face sometimes.
I don't think there's any proof of when the map became a draught excluder - it may have sat in a trunk for years before being utilised that way.
yeah - but how long ago since the documents were stuffed up chimney

Yes like anyone comes across an ancient map, rolls it up with some rags and then stuffs it up the chimney to stop those infernal draughts?
Isn't it possible that they had no clue what it was? Found it in a bag in the attic and thought 'That will do the trick'?

Like one would do???????

I cannot even believe that it was used as a draught excluder, more feasible to have been hidden in the chimney space for some reason.
Interesting theory , we may never know.
it sounds as if it was crumpled up, which would make putting it back together trickier; and that sounds as if they had no idea what it was. But I assume you'd only do it with a chimney you didn't plan to use for some time.
