Replacing a boiler - removing a tank

I'd like to replace my current hw boiler with a combi - this would also allow me to remove the existing hot water storage tank, but above that is a cold tank. Would I still need to retain that, remove it altogether, or replace with a smaller one?

p.s. it's in a second floor flat, and there is a separate, smaller tank in the loft

Hi alfie, the cold water tank would go as well the combi works direct from the mains,one down side is you won't have the hot water cylinder with immersion heater as back up if the combi goes wrong, they normally put a rad in cupboard where cylinder was,so you still have an airing cupboard,hope this helps, Ray

alfie, Your installer should make sure that the tank does not provide a draw-off to either the ground floor, or first floor properties. It is possible -- I've seen it done.

Thanks all. There's no immersion heater, so I won't be missing anything there - one of the reasons for going for a combi.

p.s. a draw-off to flats below? Any idea how to investigate?
There's an overflow, but that's all I know about.

alfie, You could ask the occupants of the properties below if they have any knowledge of their plumbing systems. Otherwise, leave it to your installer, who will probably be able to tell by the pipework connected to the tanks.

Just had a combi done. Daft old plumber took the redundant cold water tank out of loft and later refused to take it away because it's asbestos! What he should have done (and I did tell him before he started bodging) was to leave it in the loft. I would have then wrapped it in polythene and put it up a corner.
