When Did We Start Wrapping Christmas Presents?

When I was a child in the fifties, none of my Christmas presents were wrapped. When I got up on Christmas day, all my presents were draped over the couch and none of them were wrapped. The dolls pram was in one place and the microscope was in another.

When did we start buying wrapping paper and ribbon and ribbony flower things and gift tags to adorn our presents? I can't remember the transition from one to the other.

My aunt (my mother's most most favourite sister) died on Christmas Eve and my god that woman (my mother) cried every single Xmas Eve - I think that's why I loathe Xmas cos it came with so many tears.

It's hard to wrap a selection of nuts and a tangerine, Prudie, and the chocolate money was already wrapped in gold foil. :-)
Bad times always seem worse when others are having fun.

Once I get started on the wrapping I don't mind it - it's the will to start that's hard sometimes.

Sorry to hear that, Jennyjoan but I'm talking about the frustration of dealing with sellotape and wrapping paper.

I think that next year, I am going to but lots of different sized Christmas bags.

Right, off to wrap up a few more. Little and often seems to be the best option.

Bye all.
Well really I bought tubes of the stuff (wrapping paper) I am now looking at it - I only buy for sista and one friend - the rest is money. All lying here for next year (Idon't think)
Bye Tillyx
Poundland were doing a little object 3 tiny rolls of sellotape and blade for £1. You shoulda got that Tilly
All my presents were wrapped in the fifties (often in brown paper with a Christmas sticker). Just asked OH (born 1933) and his were also wrapped. There are several Victorian paintings depicting wrapped presents.
MIne weren't wrapped. There were 5 children and I think mum thought it an unnecessary expense for something that would be thrown away.
My presents were always wrapped back in the 50s. Also those in the stocking, except for the tangerine.
I hate wrapping presents too. Mr Nellie wraps everything!
Ditto Prudie. All my presents were wrapped ( I have a memory of my mother wrapping presents, in a hot steamy breakfast room smelling of Robin's Starch) but they must have been for others as Father Christmas brought mine. But the stockings were magic. My kids say the same actually. Now the grandchildren are enjoying the magic, although now we receive texts from FC asking how they are behaving.
That's very sad Jennyjoan. It made miss out on such joy
My sister and I always had a pillowslip full but they were all wrapped. I must add we had to open them carefully so we could use the paper again next year. I am not sure why we never asked how father Christmas got the paper back again and knew it was ours.
Well one year I received a beautiful baby boy doll - he was wrapped up but somehow I didn't get around to playing with him - as my mother wrapped up the same doll the following year only with a wig of plaits and a dress. Was I fooled. But she didn't have the money. LOL
I would recommend a Sellotape dispenser - it makes wrapping things so much easier.

Where was the coach & horses hidden?
