Has anybody ever been in a relationship with somebody who had english as their second language? A Polish woman im seeing speaks pretty good english but its more the culture barrier im struggling with...any advice?

My little sister lives with a guy from Portugal. Sometimes I'm not really sure what he is saying lol but my sister says she hardly notices anymore

Lol hello again toots x Its more the way we say something, like ill say something and she'll understand it but not really understand what i mean - has caused a few frosty silences and arguments. She's a few years older than me too so dont know if thats contributing to it also

Haha thats how we got together in the first place! The physical stuff is great its just the other side of things that i could do with some help on, ive had physical based relationships in the past and theyve never really lasted and i really like this woman. so frustrating sometimes lol. Nice to talk to you again to hon :)

Seriously I know what you mean, my son attends an International School. It is very easy for the joy to be sucked out of a conversation, by having to explain a lot what you said, and it not being funny where they are from!! Shall we form a support group?

<PRE>a bit different this one but my husband is deaf so english is kind of his second language. very difficult when he has people who are deaf round and they are all signing to eachother. I went to college and learnt basic sign languase for difficult words. he can lip read but there are a few funny moments when he completely gets the wrong end of the stick, so basically if you love her that much, learn a bit of Polish.</PRE>

Lol i'm trying to learn some actually but i have never come across such an alien language! The spelling to pronunciation crossover is totally wierd and bless her, she's not very good at explaining it. At least i can swear at you lot in Polish now rofl ;)

I don`t know if this counts, but English is my second language. I was brought up Welsh speaking at home & school. Even now, I speak more Welsh on a daily basis than English.

English is Mr S's second language . he speaks better English than me ! I have a second language too...Mr S's . Stick with it .
If she offers to take you to Poland to meet her folks ...go...you will learn more in a couple of weeks than you think ! I never dreamt when I married him umpteen years ago that I would be fluent in another language without ever having to learn it from a book or classes.

Yes my girlfriend is hehehehe. Just speak to her in as basic language as you can.That is what everyone did to me to start with .Then as you start to pick up more words start talking more slangy(don't think that is a word but hey) and she will soon pick it up.Having different cultures is good and needn't be a problem.

Be patient and explain all the cultural references and stuff, she'll get used to them and start recognising them - you'll soon forget there was a problem.

My mate is Italian and she lives there and she was seeing an English guy. It worked for 4yrs and the culture thing was never a problem until he wanted to go out and get drunk like some yob and she wanted to drink in classy places. He moved to Italy with her but she lives in a tiny village and he would get drunk all the time and stagger out of pubs! Drove her mad.. He is now with a Polish girl though! She married him within 6months of knowing him.. think she needed a VISA!
