Why Do Some Cats Keep Walking In Circles When You Stroke Them?

When you see a cat outdoors and it comes to be stroked many keep walking round either in a circle or behind you and back rather than staying in one place. Is there a known reason they do this?

Naturally they 'smooth' a post or corner of the couch so they get a pleasant sensation and turn to do it again. When they rub with their cheek they deposit their scent.
Toms (and even some queens) will also spray urine to let others know it is their domain, and it stinks to high heaven.
