Replacement Car Keys

Had the misfortune recently to find one of my bunches of keys are missing. Since they have failed to turn up after a couple of weeks I started getting replacement keys cut. But I've just had the Hyundai dealer tell me that a new encoded car key will cost all but £400 !

Clearly ridiculous for a key. Is there a more reasonable cost way to get a working replacement ? I did enquire at a local Timpson's but they said I'd have to go to a particular branch, and now I hear the cost of the dealer supplying, I'm wondering if other merely supply an uncoded key, or something.

Sorry bhg - yes I had to start the engine firstly with a chipped key turn it off then immediately insert the new key

I've only just come back in myself Islay, so I hadn't felt ignored. That sounds a good system - secure but easy for the owner.

Yes - that's the procedure I had to use to "re-pair" a key to my previous car when I replaced the dead battery in one of the keys.

As someone else has said, check your insurance policy. My car insurance covers for replacement car keys that have been lost or stolen

I used the local locksmith route, asked around locally, visited and saw that he had been accredited and had the correct equipment from the car manufacturer. Total £50. That was about 10 years ago so no doubt the price has gone up a bit by now.
