Shopping In Primark

Walked through my local Primark today. I have never bought anything before from Primark as I find it irritating but decided that I wanted some more socks as I wanderer through.

I bought a pack of five black socks for £1.70!


How do they do that? I normally pay at least eight pounds for three pairs of socks.

Poor kids in 3rd world work as part of their growing. We cant impose our nurturing on their parents.

Prudie....lets make sure I understand this....its poor British families, that are buying stuff made in sweatshops, by even poorer foreign families, while Primark's shareholders make shed loads of money. ?

What would happen if we all stopped buying from them today? They aren't going to be suddenly supplied with air-conditioned offices and full employment laws- it will hit the workers first and hardest.
Obviously the less work they have available, the more competition there is for it and the pay drops.... i'm not sure boycotting is the answer.

Mamy....A difficult conundrum, I will accept.

But its similar to what was said when we abandoned slavery here in Britain....."Goodness !...what on earth are all those black going to do now" ?

When we stopped sending small boys up chimneys, where would we been the result, if people had voiced concern about where all those 1000's boys now out of work ?

The principle here is clear, as I have explained above to Prudie......large profits being made for Primark, while British people continue to buy their products.

Mamy...as long as the British people continue to profit from sweatshops, then no, we are no nearer a solution.

Mikey you are also missing my principle - Primark provides a retail outlet for the poor of Britain, the fact they make money out of it is life. If you had your way British poor couldn't buy cheap stuff, sweatshop workers wuld have nothing to do but beg on the street - but hey as long as an ideology is upheld what does it matter.

Tilly, if you didn't buy there, all their slaves would be out of work, getting nothing instead of peanuts. Your moral duty is clear.

Peanuts jno? When I visited the indian gold triangle, our coach guide charged us £10 each for beggers alms. I saw him give a pinch a rice to each of 10+ beggers at the Taj Mahal.

I was thinking about workers rather than beggars. But would the beggars have got even a pinch of rice if the tourists were left to dish out alms themselves?

That was an interesting thread. Thank you all for your contributions. If I'm honest I would say that I stay away from Primark because our town centre shop is such a tip!

I usually get about six feet into the store and then beat a hasty retreat. I can't bear the mess.
