Does anyone know whether Cable broadband is faster than ADSL? Or is the telewest salesman just saying that to get my custom?

I guess it depends on what package you buy. You can buy broadband (which includes both cable and ADSL) in varying speeds: 128, 256, 512, 1024 or 2048 Kbps and the higher the number the "broader" your broadband. If you compare a 512 Kbps ADSL with a 512 Kbps cable connection, I don't think there is much in it. Ask to see the raw data to see how much the "facts" have been massaged. Cable can have a higher contention ratio than DSL. Cable has a higher top-speed than DSL (but this speed isn't anywhere near being offered commercially). DSL is more flexible (you can migrate to another provider). Cable can have lower latency. Cable (NTL) caps bandwidth usage to a pitiful 1Gb/day. This sounds like a huge amount, but on a 1Mb connection is, as I say, pitiful. DSL providers don't cap because they know you'll simply migrate to someone who doesn't.

No all too technical!! head gonna explode!! lol :) it was only a simple question really and i just wanted to know if you are connected to either will cable seem faster than adsl? i didn't phrase my question very well. Reason i asked being that i have 512 adsl and i have never been overly impressed wth the speed. Telewest are just starting to offer broadband in my area so i was thinking of changing over to them. But i now have my adsl working faster so i am going to keep it for the time being. I only needed to download a new driver for my modem! Thanks for both your answers anyway :)

I dont have ADSL and never have so I don't know. But do you have to connect when using ADSL. I have NTL cable running at 600Kbps and I have never found it slow or un reliable, and its always on no need to connect or diconnect its just there. One thing is that NTL and Telewest are both 600Kbps but ADSL tends to be 512Kbps I think thats what they may be talking about.

LisaJ. I have NTL 1meg BB and i have never been capped. The other day i hit around the 4gig mark. I am regularly around the 2/3 gig mark. I have been with NTL since they started 1meg and never had a problem
