cheaper just to taxi !
He could do but when he has paid for insurance and road tax ( remember you can't transfer road tax now, you have to buy new) it may not be a lot cheaper, then he has to sell the car again.
There are a lot of much cheaper car hire places, if he gets home on public transport and looks around for a local hire company.
This is way over the top !

I have just a look, at random, at Hertz. For a small car, for 25 years old, the cost was about £116 for the week !
I hire cars a lot when I fly back to visit my parent and I have never paid that much for a week!!
has he shopped around? That seems very high
Is this an airport pick up car hire? They are VERY expensive, get home and as I said look for a local car hire. Or get to the airport and look around the smaller hire companies, they are MUCH cheaper, and he can drop off the car at the airport on the way back.
jno....its not high, its astronomical !
Has he got driving convictions?

Last time we were back in Ireland it cost us about £200 for 5 days but they took £1,600 deposit.
I think there may have been a misunderstanding- unless it was for just one day, it was Lamborghini, included a chauffeur or exceptional circumstances affected the insurance premiums
Fraser.....Have a look at this website ::

https://www.hertz.co.uk/rentacar/reservation/?targetPage=reservationOnHomepage.jsp&refererUrl=&searchString=&id=27662&;LinkType=

There almost certainly cheaper rates if you continue looking !

Has he hired a Lamborghini or something like that, fraserstuart ?.
The company I occasionally contract for got me a hire car (when my own was off the road) in October. 6 days hire, from Tuesday to Monday cost a total of £82. (A Ford Fiesta with only about 3000 miles on the clock).

It was booked through http://www.rentalcars.com
The name of the hire company, as shown on the booking, was Firefly but the sign above the door at the rental place said Hertz.
