Something In The Roof
30 Answers
I wonder if anyone could give me some ideas as to what might be in my extension roof. the roof of this extension is totally self contained from the rest of the house, we have seen no evidence of rats, mice etc in the house, but it may be if that is what it is, they cant get anywhere else.
we hear these noises intermittently, sometimes quite loud, sometimes softer but our cat always hears it and looks up. the noises are always in the same place, in the corner where our house joins onto next door's and right on the outside edge, where the extension joins a conservatory.
its a strange noise, not a scratching exactly, more like something in that's trying to get out. but whatever it is, must be able to get in and out otherwise it would die.
our local council make a charge for pest control, so we would like to be sure it is a pest before we get them in. as we have cats, who go on the roof, am not awfully keen on poison baits. there are squirrels round about but are they likely to come inside. also birds, but again its hardly the time for nesting, although we have been hearing this noise for some time now.
sometimes we won't hear it for days, then can hear it several days in a row. very rarely do we hear it during the day, more often during the evening, and since the darker nights, we are hearing it earlier, around 5 pm. its a bit of a mystery and welcome some insights from anyone who might have any.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.its a solid concrete foundation about 6 feet deep. we have found out that a man who goes in the local pub works for local authority. he popped round and even he cant work out what it might be, cant see any points of access or evidence of anything. naturally they made no noise while he was here. could be rats, mice, or it could be a squirrel, which is what we were concerned about. its £70 to have them come officially, they will put down a box with poisoned bait, but no pet animal can get into it, so thats a relief. this has to be the way forward for the moment.
well as an update to this, we have had the rat man, he left poison in traps, and that was almost two weeks ago. he is coming back next week to check the trap, although he said usually if its rats or mice they take it within 3 to 4 days. we are still hearing these noises though. so not sure where that leaves us. i am thinking about a bird in the eaves? we have big fat pigeons around here, lots of them but i cannot for the life of me see how one of those could get in there. i am dreading the thought of having to take the roof off!!
thanks for the information. it's now 2 weeks since the poison was put down, the guy is coming back hopefully in the next day or so, and then we will see if any of it has been taken. its really strange, because we hadnt heard them for several days, but heard them again the last day or so. its also very strange, because if there were rats around the garden, next doors (semi feral) cats, are really good at catching stuff and there has been no signs of half eaten rats, or mice for that matter. I am assuming that if they are around, they would take the bait no matter where it was put, but might be wrong about that. dont know a great deal about rat behaviour!!
well as an update - the rodent man is pretty certain this is not rats, the poison has not been taken by rats he is sure. not mice for sure. strangely the pattern lately has been - weather turns really cold, hear nothing, or very little. weather turns warmer - sometimes very noisy - the other night it sounded as though something round had dropped on the ceiling, rolled and something was going after it. when we hear it, its in the morning, but more often at night, sometimes quite late. the other night it sounded like it/they were having a party. i am leaning very much more now towards squirrels, one was seen a few days ago very close the conservatory, which is joined to the house extension whose roof is its/their home. but squirrels - how to get rid of them. we can't get inside the roof space - without taking part of the roof off. its impossible to get underneath the roof overhang to see if there are any entry homes because we can't climb onto the conservatory roof. any ideas?
Squirrels are easily caught in cage traps in the garden with a bit of fruit set as bait. The squirrel will need to be destroyed if its a grey squirrel as its illegal to release them again.
Personally if your Pest Controller still doesn't know what the problem is, you need a different pest controller!
There is also squirrel poison on the market but may not be suitable to be used in your situation.

we are struggling with this, as is the best controller as we are the only people who have heard the noise, he has not. he checked his poison boxes and insists it is not rats that have been at it, more likely mice. this is too noisy for mice. we hear it at strange times, 11 am, this afternoon 3.30 pm, 7 pm, sometimes 10 or 11 pm. we are not in the room where its heard during the night. sometimes we hear nothing for days. impossible to find entry points along the whole length of the extension due to conservatory built up to it, can't get a ladder up to look under roof overhang at fascia boards etc. can't get a trap inside the roof space, only on top of roof, or near extension. just as likely to trap next door's cats!! wouldn't surprise me if it WAS next doors cats.
