HC....from the little that you have told me about the incident, I don't think you should have paid anything at all.

The reason that you were charged is that you were driving a car, which was taxed and insured ( I presume ! ) and was therefore an easy target to be fleeced.

OG, if a motor vehicle is in any involved with an accident with a pedestrian or cyclist and an ambulance is called, the driver is billed whether it is his fault or not

At least they had the common sense to take some equipment with them, stay together and use the equipment. Also to have somebody know they were missing and to know where they were going.

mikey cyclists do not have insurance so they get a 'free ride'. It is ALWAYS the vehicle drivers fault even if the cyclist rides straight into a stationary car. I live just outside 'cycle city' (aka Cambridge.) I have been told by a Cambridge traffic policeman that in any accident the vehicle driver ALWAYS gets the bill as cyclists do not need insurance so can't be charged.
If you are involved in an accident involving a bike and it is the cyclists fault you can only try to recover costs by personally suing the cyclist.
