I think that's a generalisation that goes along with 'My wife doesn't understand me ....' and all the other accepted cliche phrases.

I've been married for nearly 20 years, and I have learned that the secret og happy marriage is compromise, so I am perfectly happy that my wife has changed, and she is happy that I have changed too.

It sounds simple - but that's because it is. Marriage is the two of you - it works if you two do, and not if you don't.

I think a lot of people expect something to just happen to them, and are disillusioned when it doesn't. I had not expectations, except to make an effort, and appreciate what I have, so that's what I have done.

andy, sounds like you have a really good marriage, thats a big well done to both you and your wife, I also have a good marriage, twenty seven years now, but I can't help sometimes looking back, and the mental fighting I had to do to try, (only partial success), to stay the same person. its just that when I heard the question, it rang bells, and I decided to post it.
When I got married 31 years ago I didn't HOPE he would change; but as I've changed a lot I'm glad he has too., otherwise I doubt we would still be together.
A woman marries a man because she loves him. Then she sets about changing him. Then she divorces him because "he's not the man she married".
