Don't know but if it was five it would be "treif", if six "taref".
'Grub'?
The word suggested by Firefly can also be spelt 'tref', which has the four-letter format you are looking for.
What about tuck. As in tuck shop ??
'Kosher', as in the question, means 'clean/acceptable' and 'tref' - from 'teraphah', meaning 'torn flesh' - means 'forbidden'. Both words are from Hebrew and refer to food, which for Jews must conform to religious law. (Nowadays, of course, we use 'kosher' in many situations, just to mean 'OK'.)

Muslims have similar food-rules and they use the Arabic words 'halal' and 'haram' in the same situation. Allbut seems to be looking for the specific Hebrew word rather than just any four-letter word for 'food'. There are several other words for food, apart from grub and tuck which fit the four-letter stipulation...eats, nosh, chow and probably others...but none of these has anything to do with 'kosher' or otherwise.

except that nosh has a yiddish derivation, and therefore a jewish link....
You should finish the question--an anagram of something you may do if you don't know the answer.Clue- would you fret very much
