It was a question on Bob Harris show last night and my Canadian cousin staying with me has thought of loads of Canadian artists but none of them have had a Number One Hit.

Any help very much appreciated ?

Just thought is it Paul Anka "Diania" in 1957 ? Can anybody confirm this or think of anybody earlier ?
Spot on, FanOfKylie - it was indeed Paul Anka. :-)

Of interest to trivia fans is the 'Can Con' rule for the Canadian charts - music will only be considered for the chart if it is written soley by a Canadian artist - it stands for 'Canadian Content'. Thus, Bryan Adams who virtually took up residence in the UK singles chart with Everything I Do I Do For You failed to chart at all in Canada, because the song was co-written my mega-producer (and Mrs Shania Twain) Robert John 'Mutt' Lange, who is of South African origin, thus rendering the song inelligible for a chart placing.

Maybe as a protest, a studio band switched the title around, and called themselves 'Con Can', and inflicted a series of utterly horrible cover versions on the world at large - including Rose Garden. All together now - "I beg your pardon ...." and so you flamin' well should!!!

Oops, just spotted a reference to them a few Questions above this one ... DOH!
